This photo shows the Cartwright family in front of an enormous statue that is referred to as the Great Buddha of Kamakura, Japan. The statue is a likeness of Amitabha Buddha made of copper which resides outdoors on the grounds of the Kotoku-in temple. This statue dates to 1252, when the construction of it began. When the Cartwrights took this photograph in front of it on October 28, 1935, the statue was nearly 700 years old. This statue is still standing today.
